Is it important for my photographer to have shot at my wedding venue before?

I get asked this question alot. In short the answer is “No.” It really isn’t important for your photographer to have shot at the location before. Any skilled photographer is going to be able to shoot at any location.

I photograph weddings all around Australia and often don’t get to see the location until I arrive and start shooting.
Photographers look for light and that is where they will gravitate. Next they look for background or textures. On any given property there will only be a handful of locations truly worth shooting and they will be instantly apparent to most photographers with a keen eye.

So why do you so often hear that it is so important? Many photographers are on a vendor list, one of a recommended few from the venue who have worked at the location before. Venues like to work with people they have worked with before because it makes it easier on everyone. It doesn’t mean they are the best choice of photographer – it may just mean that they are the easiest to work with or that they have a long standing relationship. Also, don’t forget the ‘favours’ that might be exchanged for leads that secure a booking.

Photographers like shooting at good venues close to their house and so make a point of letting you know that they are the right person for the job since they know the property so well and have shot there before.
In reality, it’s just not that important.
In addition, having worked a location one too many times can make them complacent and not really look for new ways to carve amazing images out of a location so it could even wind up being a rehash of last weeks shoot!

In short, select the photographer whose composition, lighting, technical skill, post production, price and personality you like, the rest is simply conjecture.

Why do good Melbourne wedding photographers shoot in RAW?

Lately I’ve been asked whether I shoot wedding photography in RAW.
Once I say that I do indeed, the next question is usually, “What is RAW?”

Couples now seem to ask the first question as a matter of course and then I bore them with a long winded answer about why I prefer to shoot wedding photography in RAW. Sorry to all those people I have bored with this previously!
In an effort not to bore any more Melbourne brides and grooms I have gathered some information that explains RAW in a little detail, with a link to continue reading if you want to be a nerd like me!

So, here we go…..
The RAW file format is digital photography’s equivalent of a negative in film photography: it contains untouched, “raw” pixel information straight from the digital camera’s sensor. The RAW file format has yet to undergo demosaicing, and so it contains just one red, green, or blue value at each pixel location. Digital cameras normally “develop” this RAW file by converting it into a full color JPEG or TIFF image file, and then store the converted file in your memory card. Digital cameras have to make several interpretive decisions when they develop a RAW file, and so the RAW file format offers you more control over how the final JPEG or TIFF image is generated.

A RAW file is developed into a final JPEG or TIFF image in several steps, each of which may contain several irreversible image adjustments. One key advantage of RAW is that it allows the photographer to postpone applying these adjustments — giving more flexibility to the photographer to later apply these themselves, in a way which best suits each image.

Money saving tips when planning your Melbourne or Yarra Valley wedding

We all know that planning a Melbourne or Yarra Valley wedding can be an expensive experience so here are a few pointers on how to make it more affordable:

Try to use a wedding cake supplier close to your venue to avoid a large delivery fee.

To save money, keep the design simple and choose square or round cakes; the more unusual the shape, the higher the price is likely to be.

Get married on a weekday. Most wedding photographers work Saturdays and Sundays so ask one to give you a great deal for a Wednesday or Thursday wedding and he or she will jump at the chance.  After all, they’re only going to be drinking coffee and playing Angry Birds otherwise!

Make your Melbourne or Yarra Valley wedding photography affordable by selecting a CD or DVD of high resolution photos for you to print at your leisure. It may cost a little more up front, but you’ll save a fortune in print costs!

This way, you can also design a wedding album once you have saved up some more money – there are plenty of online retailers who will help you do this.

Email your ‘Save the Dates’ instead of posting (to save on printing and postage).

Use your own/borrow a friend’s nice car instead of hiring a car for transport.

Have a buffet meal instead of a served three course dinner.

Ask the videographer to record only the ceremony – not both the ceremony and reception.

The photographer doesn’t have to stay through the reception either  – family can take the fun snaps for you.

Ensure the photographer takes a ‘mock cut’ of the cake photo then send him home!

As always, we’re happy to hear your suggestions for ways to save money when planning your wedding in Melbourne, Dandenong Ranges or the Yarra Valley.
