Kate & Andrew, Gardens House Wedding

Kate and Andrew scored a beauty of a Melbourne day for their December wedding.

Following an amusing but heartfelt ceremony with family and a truckload of friends at the beautiful Gardens House in Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens, we strolled the Botanic gardens’ shady areas for photos (with the hope of keeping everyone cool!) before taking the couple and their bridal party to Richmond’s finest back streets and sketchy alleyways for more photos on route to the wedding reception, alongside the Yarra at Fenix.

When a bridal party are enthusiastic and energetic, it doesn’t really matter where you end up for photos as their high spirits and humour will usually keep the mood buoyant and the smiles natural!

Are you planning a wedding ceremony or reception at Gardens House?  I’d love to hear about your plans!

Kerrianne & Tim

I really do love working with visitors from out-of-town.  It’s always such fun to see your own city from a different angle or through another persons (fresh) eyes.

Mostly, when I work with couples who are visiting from interstate in order to get married, they are usually from warmer climes further north such as Brisbane, Townsville or the NT, and since their cities or towns don’t always have what makes Melbourne so interesting and special they are always keen to get amongst it and explore.

We usually do the traditional legal stuff first, just like the locals, and then all bets are off as we take a wander through Melbourne’s laneways, alleys, gardens and wherever else takes our fancy.

I love it when couples are happy to let it all unfold and see what happens as it always throws up some fun photography locations and opportunities.

Kerrianne & Tim recently eloped (well, along with 20 family members!) to Melbourne from north Queensland and were keen to take a wander around Melbourne to see a few of the recommended spots that I had told them about, as well as find a few new sites along the way.  We strolled through Fitzroy Gardens for some lush green wedding photography backgrounds before heading back to the CBD streets to find some graffiti and explore the laneways and alleys.

I rarely go to Hosier Lane & ACDC Lane for wedding photos now as it feels a little overdone of late and is often overcrowded at weekends, so it was a nice surprise to see some really great new artworks.

Tim was really excited to find the Malcolm Young mural on ACDC Lane which we incorporated into a few of their wedding photos. The bins are a nice touch, eh?!

Being open to almost anything, Kerrianne & Tim indulged a request of mine to use a stairway on a side of a building just off Flinders Lane that I’ve passed on numerous occasions, but have always been pushed for time or the weather has been bad so I haven’t had the chance to make use of it.

Are you planning on eloping to Melbourne to get married?  I’d love to photograph your marriage and then take you on a wander for some natural and candid photos afterwards – or you can take me on a wander if you prefer!

Alison & Paul’s Port Melbourne Wedding

With the plan to keep proceedings low key and fun (ie. let’s not let the photographer drag us around the city for hours and skip straight to the party) we only had a short amount of time for photos following Alison & Paul’s winter wedding ceremony in Port Melbourne.

With a ticking clock and just a smidge of daylight left, we still managed to knock off 3 different locations all within a stones throw of each other in Port Melbourne before we finished up with a photo featuring a glorious sky and their vintage Holden. Short and sharp, just the way I like it!

Your wedding can be whatever your want it to be!

I love modern weddings. You know – the ones where the couple do exactly what they want and put on a great party that represents them and their lives.  No stuffiness, no BS.

Shortly before emigrating from Melbourne to Germany, Betuel and Toshi hosted their wedding in Melbourne with a marriage ceremony at one of their favourite outdoor spots in the Royal Botanic Gardens, followed by a reception at one of their regular beer gardens, The Village. Not a farewell and not a traditional wedding, the whole evening felt like a giant party. And what a party!

In keeping with doing everything their own way, they created a wedding cake that combined three of my favourite things in the whole world – Star Wars, Lego and cake.  Genius!

Good luck for your new life in Germany – keep doing things your own way!

Wedding Photography Can Be Dangerous

Bouquets hurt.  I’d never really considered the perils of wedding photography before, but after being hit by a bridal bouquet I might increase my insurance premiums…

The bride at this particular wedding wasn’t enamoured with her flowers and was at the point of pitching them into the nearest bin so I thought we could have a bit of fun with them in a photo.  My briefing was possibly lacking in detail and direction so instead of all five bouquets sailing over my head and beautifully captured in flight, the shot below happened. One bouquet went straight up, two over my head (well done those bridesmaids!), one stayed in the hand and one hit me.

In case you’re interested, a wedding bouquet travelling at speed following a lob from an enthusiastic bridesmaid hurts. Luckily I was fine, but a less muscular and rugged wedding photographer could be injured!

Picnic wedding, Studley Park

Ainsley & Lucas decided upon a low key and casual picnic wedding in Studley Park. Held near the Boathouse with their nearest and dearest, it was held midweek on a beautiful summer day in early January.  Glorious sunshine and a light breeze made it perfect picnic weather – ideal for sitting under a tree, quaffing champagne and messing about on the water!

Twinkly lights

This is a shot from Sarah & Mike’s wedding at the Substation in Newport.  If you haven’t come across it before, the venue is a really good ‘blank canvas’ space for those of you wanting to do your own thing in an alternative space.

Sarah & Mike decorated the venue themselves, and a cracking job they made of it too! Also, I’m pretty sure their music was close to my perfect playlist – I’ll hire you two as DJs when I eventually get married!

Gardens near the Yarra River, Richmond

There is a stretch along the Yarra river near Richmond which doesn’t have many options if you want wedding photography in picturesque gardens and I’ve often either used the riverside (with it’s never ending stream of joggers!) or moved further afield to Fitzroy Gardens or somewhere similar get the greenery I’ve wanted for the photos. Until now that is!

The bride’s canny auntie at a recent wedding suggested these gardens a few weeks before the wedding so I popped along for a ‘butchers’. What a winner! They’re like the city’s Botanic gardens but much quieter and compact with loads of variety and options for photos. I’ve only seen them in Autumn but I’m excited to see them in the warmer months and can’t wait to get back there to shoot some more.

Where are they? I’m not telling that secret – this ones for clients only!

So, if you’re hosting your wedding reception at somewhere like Leonda by the Yarra, Fenix or The Boulevard then these gardens might be an easy option for some great looking photos.
You might find them by poring over google maps, but make a large pot of tea because it’s going to take you a while

G&T anyone?

Hows this for a great looking wedding cake?  I bet it even tastes even better than it looks!  Well, if you like gin and tonic that is…

Yes, ladies and gentlefolk this wedding cake is a Gin & Tonic cake!  I don’t even like gin and I desperately want a huge slice of it!  It’s got to be refreshing on this humid evening, right?!

I’ve yet to discover where the bride and groom procured this amazing construction from, but once I find out they’re going straight to the top of the cake section on my recommended suppliers list.

Why I love Melbourne wedding photography

As much as I enjoy all the photography work I do, ranging from corporate portraits and conference photography through to red carpets and live music and corporate event photography, I have to admit that I really love my Melbourne wedding photography work the most.

And do you know the reason why? Super clients and gorgeous wedding details aside, I think it’s the city that makes the experience so fun for me.

Sure, we could be in Queensland with the their cloudless blue skies and 30c temps every day, but after a while the whole notion of perfection wears a bit thin.

That’s where Melbourne excels!

We have beaches with gorgeous white sand down on the Bellarine and Mornington Peninsulas, beautiful vineyards and rolling hills in the nearby Yarra Valley (not forgetting Redhill either!), plus the manicured gardens of the city accompanied by it’s stunning architecture.

Where else can you be at the end of the pier (St Kilda) for some stunning seascape and beach shots and then within 10 minutes be back amongst the columns of the Goldrush era buildings of Treasury, Hotel Windsor and Parliament House. There is elegance and history that can’t be imitated or replicated elsewhere.

By now we’ve already used up 2 hours of photography time and I haven’t even mentioned the numerous laneways, colourful graffiti and alternative areas of Brunswick and Northcote. We know some fabulous Melbourne wedding photography locations in those areas so please ask if you would like some ideas for your bridal portraits.

The city’s great vibe also rubs off on people – Melbourne couples are generally relaxed and easy going (yes, even on their wedding day!) and it really shows through in the photos, with a calm, happy and relaxed demeanour allowing the photographer to play with the light and the location without any added pressure. We also find that our clients allow us to do our job, trusting us that we know the best locations for photography, all the while helping us become the best wedding photographers in Melbourne. And for that we thank you!

So, if you’re looking for an recommended Melbourne wedding photographer and would like to hear our ideas for your wedding or just chew the photography fat, then please get in touch.
