Stokehouse, St Kilda – the best wedding venue in Melbourne?

I’m going to stick my neck out on this one and declare the Stokehouse in St Kilda the best wedding venue in Melbourne. Well, on a sunny day in summer it is!

I had the pleasure of photographing Heidi & Dennis’ wedding reception there on a scorcher of a day in March – the blue skies, the amazing food, the chilled white wine – what is there not to love?!

Photos from the actual wedding shoot are coming soon, but in the meantime enjoy a glass of something cold!

Jim’s Weddings?!

Over a Christmas ale or two earlier in the week, another Melbourne based wedding photographer mentioned that he had heard a credible rumour of the Jim’s franchise branching out from mowing, accounts, dog washing and fence building into…. WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY!

Please, someone tell me it’s not true and I’ve fallen for an old joke. Please!
If there is one business that I don’t think is suitable for franchising, it’s wedding photography! On the upside, if you do book with them, they might throw in an free dog-wash or something!

Next you’ll be telling me that someone has started a business named Snappr and is charging next to nothing for photos….  Don’t forget kids, you get what you pay for in this world! The same usually goes for wedding photography!

Which photographs are the most important at a wedding?

Arguably, the most important shots from a set of wedding photographs are those featuring the bride and groom kissing during the ceremony or the posed shots of the couple at their chosen location somewhere in Melbourne or the Yarra Valley.

For me, just as important are the detail shots from various parts of the day. Quite often, as all the guests are sitting down to their meals at the reception venue I will crack out the macro lens and start shooting some of the reception details whilst everyone is distracted by their food.
I quite enjoy this time, as more often than not, the objects don’t move, I don’t have to give instructions, and it’s just me, my narrow point of focus and a few minutes of quiet to regroup before I’m up and running around again.

If making a wedding album, these detail shots are also important to the loose narrative that usually runs through an album, punctuating the story and giving the viewer a taste of everything that happened on the day.

So, if you’re at a wedding reception anytime soon and you see the photographer still playing with their camera rather than taking a break, you’ll know why!

Why do good Melbourne wedding photographers shoot in RAW?

Lately I’ve been asked whether I shoot wedding photography in RAW.
Once I say that I do indeed, the next question is usually, “What is RAW?”

Couples now seem to ask the first question as a matter of course and then I bore them with a long winded answer about why I prefer to shoot wedding photography in RAW. Sorry to all those people I have bored with this previously!
In an effort not to bore any more Melbourne brides and grooms I have gathered some information that explains RAW in a little detail, with a link to continue reading if you want to be a nerd like me!

So, here we go…..
The RAW file format is digital photography’s equivalent of a negative in film photography: it contains untouched, “raw” pixel information straight from the digital camera’s sensor. The RAW file format has yet to undergo demosaicing, and so it contains just one red, green, or blue value at each pixel location. Digital cameras normally “develop” this RAW file by converting it into a full color JPEG or TIFF image file, and then store the converted file in your memory card. Digital cameras have to make several interpretive decisions when they develop a RAW file, and so the RAW file format offers you more control over how the final JPEG or TIFF image is generated.

A RAW file is developed into a final JPEG or TIFF image in several steps, each of which may contain several irreversible image adjustments. One key advantage of RAW is that it allows the photographer to postpone applying these adjustments — giving more flexibility to the photographer to later apply these themselves, in a way which best suits each image.

Meet the best Melbourne wedding photographers at the next wedding expo

BUT …. not this photographer!

Sorry for the misleading headline, but I had to grab your attention somehow!

I’m often asked by brides why they haven’t seen me at the huge wedding expos that happen in Sydney and Melbourne every year.

Is it money? No, I have a budget for the advertising of my wedding photography services, but it’s not about the cost. (Although, $10,000 for a prime position at the larger expos is a little much if you ask me!)

It comes down to effective advertising and promotion. Do you know what I find the best kind of advertising?

Thats right, it’s the type you can’t buy…..word of mouth recommendations.  I could create the fanciest advert on the glossiest paper, but most people are still going to listen to their best mate, work colleague or second cousin over me.

So, whilst you won’t see any flashy adverts or pick up any free Minties at my expo stand, I continue to offer some of the best and most affordable wedding photography in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley thanks to the words of praise from my previous clients.

Laura & Dave’s Quat Quatta Wedding

It’s taken me while to get around to posting this Melbourne wedding – I shot so many photos on the day that it took forever to edit!  When I shoot loads like that, it generally means that I was either enjoying myself and got carried away or there was so much visual stimulation that I had to try and capture it all.

With this wedding, there was plenty to look at – beautiful venue, happy and relaxed couple, fine weather and a fabulous wedding venue – one of Melbourne’s best, in fact! Quat Quatta really is a great place for a wedding – numerous locations for photos, efficient staff, fabulous food and an elegant building with some great history.

Just a few tasters from the day, which included a quick stop at Parliament and also the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Carlton Gardens:

2024 Tips for great wedding photography in wet weather

What happens if it rains on my wedding day?

They do say it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding, but we’re not entirely convinced! Don’t get us wrong, rain is a wonderful thing – especially when Melbourne is often so short of the wet stuff – but in most people’s dreams about their wedding day it’s a brilliantly clear blue sky day with not a cloud in the sky. Rain can put a real damper on this kind of perfect weather wedding day, so it’s pays to have a think about what you will do if it rains.

From a wedding photography point of view rain can be a real problem and unfortunately it can wreck havoc with your photography plans, so it pays to have a back up photography plan for adverse weather conditions, especially if you are having an outdoor ceremony or want a lot of photos in the middle of vineyards or a beach

It is advisable to start to check the weather forecast only 5-7 days before your wedding. If you check it any earlier than this as you won’t be getting an accurate forecast. A great website and app for reliable weather forecasts in Melbourne is the Bureau of Meterology.

If you have an iphone, don’t use it’s built-in weather app – I wonder if refers to the same Melbourne on some days and proves notoriously unreliable! The radar and forecasting on the Weatherzone app appears to be much more reliable.

If rain or bad weather is forecast, then it’s time to swing your wet weather back up plans into action! These should ideally be done a few months before your wedding date.

What are your wet weather wedding ceremony plans?

So, what if rain is on the cards for your wedding day and you’ve planned an outdoor wedding?

Well, don’t panic (or not too much, at least!) but do get organised to ensure you have a back up location for wet weather on the day.

A good first option is your wedding reception venue so check with them if this is ok and what sort of set up they can create for you.

You should be able to make the place look good with decorations from your outdoor ceremony, and go down to the venue and see what it will look like the day before!

Another option is to find cover somewhere near your outdoor wedding location. This can work well if light showers or intermittent rain is forecast, as you might only need cover for a short period of time.

If you plan to be in a park there are often rotundas or picnic areas that can be used for wet weather shelter, or look to locate yourself somewhere out of the prevailing wind to get a little more cover from the elements.

What happens if it rains during your wedding photography?

Your wedding photographer should be able to suggest good places for undercover wedding photography  locations in Melbourne.

If they are a local photographer their knowledge will be spot on for great places that can be covered and away from wild weather. Be sure to discuss this at your first or subsequent meetings and take some time to look at the suggested locations yourself to see if you like them.

You might be surprised what a professional photographer can create in certain locations, even in the wet, so trust them that they will be able to take good photos.

Another option is to stick it out in the open, and if you plan on doing this you might want to schedule more time for your wedding photos (so you can shelter between showers!).

It is also a wise idea to purchase several big umbrellas. Your photographer might have a preference for colour, but generally white umbrellas are the best option so they don’t distract from the photos.  White is also a good option for helping the photographer to bounce a flash off them should be need a little help in the lighting department!

Be careful what colour or printing is on the underside of the umbrellas: you don’t want lovely wedding photos with someone’s corporate logo emblazoned across them all!

Is rain and wet weather bad in wedding photos?!

From a photography point of view some wet weather is actually not all bad……ok it’s bad, but it’s not ALL bad!

Wet weather can be good because clouds add a lot of drama and punch to your photos, whereas a flat blue sky can be rather uninteresting. Recent rain will make everything sparkle and look fresh and vibrant, whereas a baking hot day will make the colours washed out and flat.

There is also the opportunity to use puddles for reflections or alternative angles.

Ask any photographer and they will most likely say that they would much rather shoot on a day with cloud cover than a bright sunny day.

Will a wedding photographer stop shooting if it rains?

As long as it’s not pouring down with rain, your wedding photographer should be ok with shooting in a little bit of wet weather as their camera gear should be weather sealed.

So light rain, some mist and that sort of level should be fine to keep taking photos.

It’s more likely that you will begin to think twice about keeping going because the rain could ruin your hair, make up, make you both cold, and potentially turn a beautifully presented outfit into a bedraggled mess!

If the rain is torrential, have a chat with your wedding photographer, who might be open to re-shooting  the bridal portraits on another day.  If they’re a professional and their gear is insured, they should be able to shoot in whatever conditions you encounter.

Remember: relax, smile and enjoy your wedding day!

We’ve seen some fantastic photos from a wet wedding day, and it’s mainly because the couple smiled, laughed, and had a lot of fun. Wet weather will only ruin your wedding if you let it!
